Well, the unbeaten streak wasn’t going to last forever, and it was just going to be a matter of time before Spanish La Liga champions Real Madrid would be handed their first loss of the 2007-08 of the Spanish La Liga. Real Madrid’s first loss in 8 matches came courtesy of Espanyol, who are ranked 5th in the league with a total of 16 points after collecting the entire 3 points from their 2-1 victory over Real Madrid at their home pitch in Montjuic.
Real Madrid head coach Bernd Schuster commented, “I don’t think the international matches took a toll. We can’t make excuses for the defeat. We lost against an Espanyol team that played a great match. We can’t look back. Being a part of Real Madrid entails going through games like these, and we just have to deal with it.”
Indeed, Espanyol was a hard team for Real Madrid, and two minutes into the match, Espanyol scored an early goal when Espanyol’s Luis Garcia kicked a corner into the penalty area and Espanyol’s Albert Riera was able to rise above everyone to head it into the near post beyond the reach of Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas.
Espanyol doubled their advantage in the 53rd minute when Espanyol captain Raul Tamudo controlled a pass from Valdo and chipped a shot over the head of Real Madrid keeper Iker Casillas.

2006-2007 Spanish La Liga Champions Real Madrid look to be in championship form as they hope to become back-to-back champions of the Spanish La Liga. Real Madrid just recently won their 3rd consecutive match of the season against Almeria, and remain undefeated in the Spanish La Liga 2007-2008 season.
The match of Real Madrid against Almeria at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid was a very slow start for the Los Galacticos home side probably because Real Madrid’s players were still recovering from their recent stint in the UEFA Euro 2008 qualifiers where most of the squad had to fulfill their obligations for international match play with their respective countries. Real Madrid keeper Iker Casillas and defender Sergio Ramos had to play for the Spanish National team; striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy and midfielder Wesley Sneijder had to represent the Netherlands; defenseman Fabio Cannavaro had to play with 2006 World Cup Champions Italy; and defender Christoph Metzelder had to play for Germany.
Almeria, in its first season being promoted to La Liga from the 2nd Division in two decades, weren’t at all sluggish, and looked to pounce on Real Madrid early on. In fact, they had such a formidable defense that closed in on midfielders Guti and Sneijder to hold up any offense from the midfield…

The Spanish champions Real Madrid played host to Atletico Madrid, and the festive atmosphere was very evident even before the match began. The intimidating Santiago Bernabeu, home pitch of Spanish La Liga Champions Real Madrid, was the stage for the 2nd leg of the Spanish Super Cup between Real Madrid and Sevilla FC.
Sevilla came into this match with a 1-0 advantage from the first leg, and Real Madrid needed to put in 2 unanswered goals if they were to win The Spanish Super Cup. The supporters of Real Madrid came in full force, and cheered their team on.
In fact, it was Madrid who led the attack early on in the first half with chances from Raul who dribbled past two defenders, but his attempt managed only to graze the post. Pepe – debuting for Madrid – had a powerful shot from outside the box which missed the target by inches. Madrid striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy also had one of the best chances for Los Merengues, but his shot from outside the box sailed past the post…[read more]
