The Stade de Gerland is the home pitch of French Ligue champions Olympique Lyonnais, and was the setting for a do-or-die Champions League group stage qualifying match against Spanish La Liga club Barcelona FC. Barcelona were on top of Group of the Champions League with 10 points while Lyon were struggling at the 3rd spot with 6 points, desperate for a positive result if they were to keep alive in the Champions League tournament.
Barcelona was without star strikers Thierry Henry and Samuel Eto’o, and star midfielder Ronaldinho was confined to the Barca bench. However, Barca head coach Frank Rijkaard still had 17-year old football phenom Bojan Krkic, Lionel Messi and Andres Iniseta to lead the Barca attack. Rijkaard’s decision was quickly rewarded on the 3rd minute when Barca forward Andres Iniesta stroked him a fine pass created by Bojan Krkic.
Lyon team captain Juninho Pernambucano scored with a free kick that curled to the far post past the reach of Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes to make the score 1-1.
