Football News: Inter Milan’s Mancini to Resign

Friday, March 14th, 2008

roberto-mancini.jpgRoberto Mancini said on Tuesday that he will resign as Inter Milan’s coach after the season is over. He has been extremely successful at Inter but after his team lost in the Soccer Betting Champions League against Liverpool he made the announcement. “The next two and a half months will be my last as the manager of the team,” Mancini said, “This is a decision that I had already taken and has nothing to do with the defeat to Liverpool.”

Inter Milan leads Serie A by six points with 11 matches left. Inter has won the last two Italian league titles. Mancini became Inter’s manager in 2004 and led the team to the Italian Cup title in his first season at the helm. Many of the players were surprised by the announcement. “We have just been eliminated form the Champions League and it’s a big delusion for everybody,” Inter striker Julio Cruz said. Inter president Massimo Moratti did not have any comment.

Soccer News: Manchester United, Arsenal, & Chelsea Advance in Champions League

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

frank-lampard.jpgPremier League teams are doing quite well in the Soccer Betting Champions League as Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea have all moved into the quarterfinals. There could be a fourth Premier League team that makes the final eight as Liverpool holds a nice lead against Inter Milan heading into their second leg game next week. “What will be, will be,” Chelsea’s Frank Lampard said. “If all four of us go through - and Liverpool are in a good position - there will be a great chance of an all-English match. It’s obviously great for England if we’re all in there but if we draw one we will have to deal with it.”

Wednesday’s Champions League games saw Chelsea defeating Olympiakos 3-0 while AS Roma eliminated Real Madrid 2-1 and Schalke beat FC Porto 4-1 on penalties after the teams went into extra time with the aggregate score tied at 1-1. The loss by Real Madrid was a surprise as the Spanish champs were knocked out for the fourth straight season. Madrid had lost the first leg game 2-1 and needed a victory but couldn’t get it as Roma won 2-1 again. Substitute Mirko Vucinic headed in the game winner in injury time to give Roma the 4-2 aggregate win. “Vucinic’s entrance changed the game,” Roma coach Luciano Spaletti said. “All of the subs who came in maintained the team’s equilibrium and made important contributions. We controlled well and had better intentions about taking this game. And we responded to the challenge.”

Serie A: Inter Milan vs AS Roma

AS Roma blew their chance to defeat Inter Milan giving up a goal in the 88th minute and it may have ended any chance they had at catching Inter in the Soccer Betting Serie A standings. Inter holds a nine-point lead on Roma with 13 rounds remaining, and the teams do not meet again this season. “It’s a draw that’s worth as much as a victory, for the way it came about,” Inter coach Roberto Mancini said.

Javier Zanetti scored in the 88th-minute to keep Inter undefeated this season.
“We’ve got a pretty good lead but we’ve got to keep going,” Zanetti said. “We still need to improve our form, because we’re not at our best.” Roma had taken the lead on a goal from Francesco Totti in the 38th minute. Inter had just missed earlier when Hernan Crespo hit one off the post. Inter was down to 10 men after losing Maxwell but Roma defender Philippe Mexes picked up his second yellow card that evened things up. Inter nearly scored in the 87th minute but Roma goalkeeper Alexander Doni made the save but he couldn’t stop Zanetti a minute later.

“We certainly could have closed out the match before, because we created a lot of chances,” Roma coach Luciano Spalletti said. “But we needed to be careful because they had three strikers on and we couldn’t get out of balance.” Inter was without their two top strikers Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Julio Ricardo Cruz due to injury.
