Arsenal now doesn’t have to be too worried about advancing in the Champions League after the 2-0 win. They can now focus on their Premier League opener against West Brom on Saturday. Arsenal started slowly against FC Twente and could have been trailing at the half but Twente couldn’t put away their chances. The second half was controlled by Arsenal as they proved they were the superior squad.

Another Premier League team escaped in first leg qualifying action. Liverpool was able to get a scoreless draw against Standard Liege in a game they easily could have lost. Liege easily could have won by two or three goals and now probably won’t advance as the return leg is at Liverpool. Liverpool started the match with captain Steven Gerrard on the bench but Andrea Dossena and newcomer Robbie Keane did make their debuts. Liege were without Oguchi Onyewu and Milan Javanovic.

Liege could have scored twice in the first few minutes but they were denied by Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina. He made a super save on a shot from Marouane Fellaini that bounced off the post. Just moments later Liverpool committed a penalty but Reina made a great save on the penalty shot. Liverpool did not play well in the early moments but they survived thanks to Reina. The second half wasn’t much better for Liverpool as they continued to struggle. Liege nearly scored in the 65th minute when Igor de Camargo just missed. Gerrard entered the game shortly thereafter in place of Keane but that didn’t seem to help Liverpool very much Liege nearly scored on a Mbokani header but Yossi Benayoun cleared it out after it had beaten Reina. Liverpool had one late chance to score but Gerrard’s free kick was saved.
