MLS Soccer Betting Preview: FC Dallas at Colorado

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

fc-dallas.jpgTwo of the top teams in the Western Conference match up against each other on Sunday as Colorado hosts FC Dallas. The Western Conference is tightly packed at the top as Los Angeles leads with 14 points heading into the weekend while Dallas is one point back with 13 and Colorado two points back with 12. This is the final game of a three-game home stand for Colorado. They lost 2-1 last Saturday to Chivas USA. Dallas is coming off a draw with Houston on Wednesday.

Colorado is a half goal favorite with a total of 2.5 under at SBG Global

Three-way line - Colorado +100, FC Dallas +210, Draw +220

The loss to Chivas last Saturday was inexcusable for Colorado. Chivas was playing without a number of injured players but Colorado did not show up to play. (Chivas USA) clearly slowed the game down from the beginning. In the first 25 minutes I thought they were a team ready to be beat. We just didn’t do anything to beat them. We were very poor, there was no energy and our passing was horrible. It just reminded me of (the) San Jose (game) all over again,” said Colorado coach Fernando Clavijo. “It seems like we are overlooking teams in distress. It wasn’t what Chivas did it was what we didn’t do. We put on pressure in the last 10 minutes, but should have put it the first 80.” Teams are really putting the clamps on Colorado playmaker Christian Gomez. “Christian needs to understand that he is a marked man. Every team that we have played so far has put someone out there to follow him all over the field,” Clavijo said.

Real Salt Lake is happy to be home because they are winless on the road this season, scoring just three goals and giving up 12. “This is not over,” Dema Kovalenko said. “There are so many games left but we have two games at home coming up, both must-wins. So, that’s what we need to concentrate on and take it one game at a time.”

Soccer Betting Preview: England Dominates U.S. in Friendly

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

england-over-us-friendly-game.jpgEngland shut out the United States 2-0 in a friendly on Wednesday at Wembley Stadium in England. Captain John Terry and Steven Gerrard scored goals for the English squad. The United States squad is playing three friendlies before their World Cup qualifier next month against Barbados. In addition to England, the U.S. will play Spain and Argentina. If the English result is any indication, the U.S. has a long way to go.

The match was completely dominated by England. Terry headed in David Beckham’s free kick in the 38th minute to give England the lead. Gerrard made it 2-0 taking a Gareth Barry pass in the 59th minute. The match was attended by only 71,233 fans, the smallest England crowd since the stadium was rebuilt and reopened a year ago.

England had a very experienced team that kept control of the match from the beginning. England nearly scored in the 11th minute but referee Kyros Vassaras blew the whistle forcing a second free kick after England would have scored on the first one. Beckham proved that he still has a lot left as he set up a number of good chances for England in the first half. He did not play the second half.

Soccer News: Chelsea Fires Manager Avram Grant

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

chelsea-fired-avram-grant.jpgA berth in the Soccer Betting Champions League final and a second place finish in the Premier League was not enough for Chelsea manager Avram Grant, as he was fired on Saturday.

Soccer Betting at SBG Global

The loss to Manchester United in the Champions League final seemed to seal his fate. “Everybody at Chelsea FC would like to thank Avram for his contribution since taking over as manager last September,” the club said, “We will now be concentrating all our efforts on identifying a new manager for Chelsea and there will be no further comment until that appointment is made.” Grant took over for Jose Mourinho in September and did a fine job but coming away without a title was not acceptable for Chelsea. Owner Roman Abramovich has said that he wants a more exciting style of play and a trophy. Grant was facing an uphill battle replacing the popular Mourinho, especially after Mourinho led the Blues to back to back league titles.

It is possible that Grant may have been fired even if Chelsea had won the Champions League final. The heart-breaking loss on penalty kicks to United definitely made it easier for the club to let him go.

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Manchester United over ChelseaManchester United defeated Chelsea in a penalty shootout 6-5 in the Soccer Betting Champions League final after the teams played to a 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time. Chelsea had a number of excellent chances to win but it was Manchester United that ultimately took home the trophy. The final between United and Chelsea was a hard fought game that included a late red card going to Didier Drogba. He was sent off in extra time but very little time remained. FA Cup Final Betting Preview: Cardiff City vs Portsmouth

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

The quarterfinals of the Portsmouth and Cardiff City meet in the final of the FA Cup at Wembley on Saturday. It is the first time since 1991 that the final will not have Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal or Liverpool. “We want to make our own history,” said Cardiff manager Dave Jones. “Maybe, over the last few years, the FA Cup has lost that little bit of magic because it has been the same teams. Portsmouth and ourselves have broken the mould this season and I don’t think that will happen again for a long, long time.” Cardiff is making their first appearance in the final since 1927. Portsmouth has not won the final since 1939.

“It’s great for everyone at the club,” Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp said, “I look at where we were two years ago (almost relegated from the Premier League), or five years ago when we were near the bottom of the Championship and now we are in the Cup final.”

Neither team has played very well lately in the league although Portsmouth has the most experience. Here are some more notes about Saturday’s match. Saturday’s final is the 127th overall. Portsmouth and Cardiff have never played each other in the FA Cup before. It is Portsmouth’s fourth appearance in the final while it is Cardiff’s third.
