Premiership giants clash in FA Cup fifth round
English Premiership giants Liverpool and Manchester United will do battle in the tie of the FA Cup fifth round after a dramatic draw in London on Monday.
League One minnows Brentford and Colchester were rewarded for their progress with sumptuous ties away to Premiership clubs, Charlton and either champions Chelsea or Everton respectively. There were also two other all-Premiership ties pulled out of the hat with Aston Villa hosting Manchester City and West Ham travelling to Bolton who conquered holders Arsenal in the fourth round.
But no doubt all eyes will be on Anfield during the weekend of February 18 and 19 for the clash between two sides that have won the famous old trophy a total of 17 times between them. United, who hold the record number of victories with 11, won the most recent battle between the bitter north west rivals in a fractious encounter at Old Trafford two weekends ago – Rio Ferdinand earning the hosts three English Premiership points with his last-minute header from a Ryan Giggs free-kick.
The pair last met in the FA Cup final in 1996 when Eric Cantona scored a dramatic late volley to give United a 1-0 victory in a season where the French genius was in inspired form and scored many crucial goals as the Red Devils won the double. Liverpool, though, triumphed in their most recent final encounter, winning 2-0 when the sides met in the League Cup in 2003. [...] Premiership giants clash in FA Cup fifth round
